چکیده

The relations M(κ, λ, µ) → B [resp. B(σ)] meaning that if A ⊂ [κ] λ with |A| = κ is µ-almost disjoint then A has property B [resp. has a σ-transversal] had been introduced and studied under GCH in [EH]. Our two main results here say the following: Assume GCH and ̺ be any regular cardinal with a supercompact [resp. 2-huge] cardinal above ̺. Then there is a ̺-closed forcing P such that, in V P , we have both GCH and M(̺ (+̺+1) , ̺ + , ̺) B [resp. M(̺ (+̺+1) , λ, ̺) B(̺ +) for all λ ≤ ̺ (+̺+1) ]. These show that, consistently, the results of [EH] are sharp. The necessity of using large cardinals follows from the results of [HJSh] and [BDJShSz].

v 1 2 D ec 1 99 8 On the ground state of solids with strong electron correlations

We formulate the calculation of the ground-state wavefunction and energy of a system of strongly correlated electrons in terms of scattering matrices. A hierarchy of approximations is introduced which results in an incremental expansion of the energy. The present approach generalizes previous work designed for weakly correlated electronic systems.

Recently, neutron stars with very strong surface magnetic fields have been suggested as the site for the origin of observed soft gamma repeaters (SGRs). We investigate the influence of a strong magnetic field on the properties and internal structure of such strongly magnetized neutron stars (magnetars). The presence of a sufficiently strong magnetic field changes the ratio of protons to neutron...

A Model with No Strongly Separable Almost Disjoint Families

We answer a question of Shelah and Steprāns [6] by producing a model of ZFC where there are no strongly separable almost disjoint families. The notion of a strongly separable almost disjoint family is a natural variation on the well known notion of a completely separable almost disjoint family, and is closely related to the metrization problem for countable Fréchet groups.
